Legendary pro wrestling commentator Jim Ross once again proved he was tougher than a two-dollar-steak this past Tuesday when it was revealed that his surgery as a result of a recent colon cancer diagnosis went off without a hitch and the doctors were able to successfully remove all of the cancer.
The WWE Hall of Famer and current AEW commentator, analyst and senior advisor shared not only the update on his health this Tuesday but also a heartfelt story about one friend who reached out to him during this difficult time period — none other than his close friend and former co-worker Stone Cold Steve Austin.
“I was at home and I got a call from Steve Austin, and when we got off the phone we had talked for 43 minutes. 43 minutes,” Jim Ross explained on the latest episode of his “Grilling JR” podcast.
He continued, “Here’s what your friends do, they call you they talk to you and at the end of the conversation they tell you they love you and that’s what Steve did.”

Good Ol’ JR added, “That’s what I got and it cheered me up and made me feel strong, vibrant and he said ‘You’re going to beat this and everything’s going to be just fine, ride or die tough it out’. And that’s what I’m going to do.”
Jim Ross and Stone Cold Steve Austin have had a close friendship of mutual respect that stems back to their on and offscreen relationship in the WWE during the Attitude Era. Ross’ passionate, unique announcing style was integral to solidifying Stone Cold Steve Austin as one of the most popular wrestlers in history with phrases like “The Texas Rattlesnake is in the building,” “All hell is about to break loose,” and “STONE COLD! STONE COLD! STONE COLD!” all being popularized by Ross.
Ross also played a significant role in getting Stone Cold to return to the WWE in 2003 when Austin had expressed frustration with the creative direction of his character and overall frustration with the company.
When talking about Stone Cold’s appearance at WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, Ross said, “He added a lot to WrestleMania, and I’m sure glad he got to make an appearance. He just adds so much to any event that he’s able to be involved in. And it was just great seeing him in that space, as we say. I’m always going to be a big Stone Cold fan. He has done so much for the pro wrestling business. It’s hard to put into words what he’s meant to pro wrestling. And so I’m a Stone Cold fan, always will be, and I believe in what Steve does. He’s good at making his own decisions. So good for him. Good for Steve. I’m glad he’s doing well, living in Nevada. And he’s just a credit to the business, without question.”
