To say that Gunther has had a stellar run thus far in the WWE would be a vast understatement. After setting the new record for longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history at 666 days, Gunther went on to defeat Randy Orton to win the 2024 King of the Ring tournament and then defeated Damien Priest for the WWE Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024.
Although Gunther’s no-nonsense demeanor, hard-hitting wrestling style and dominant winning record have attributed to his incredibly intimidating run as a heel, one former WWE Hall of Famer thinks that Gunther needs to dial back his dominance a little bit to be more effective as villain in the WWE.
“I like [Gunther],” Undertaker said on a recent episode of his “Six Feet Under with Mark Caloway” podcast. “I think he’s kind of a throwback to a different era. As painful as those chops look… you think he’s beating you down and [he’s doing it] without doing a lot of aerial attacks.”
Undertaker added, “It’s nice to see somebody grind somebody down and yeah, I think he’s gonna have to be careful… he needs to add a little more, I think, chicken sh*t to his repertoire or he’s gonna become a babyface much sooner than he expects. That’s just the way it is now.”
As one of the most physically dominant big men ever in his 30-year-tenure with the WWE, an Undertaker vs. Gunther match would have been a special kind of slobberknocker. Alas, Undertaker retired back in November of 2020, so an Undertaker vs. Gunther match will likely never become a reality unless it’s a special, cinematic “Boneyard Match” like the one which took place between Undertaker and AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36 — a match which saw the Dead Man and The Phenomenal One taking part in a Buried Alive stipulated match at an undisclosed cemetery and warehouse in the Orlando area.
Notwithstanding, Gunther has named current WWE superstars Sheamus and Ilja Dragunov as two opponents who bring the best out of him in the ring currently. He also thinks Brock Lesnar would be the perfect “end boss” type-character for him to face off against at some point in his career.
Do you agree with how Undertaker thinks Gunther needs to act ‘a little more chicken sh–‘ or he risks turning babyface? Do you think Gunther would be less effective as a babyface? Let us know in the comments.
