The Batman Part II villain has “never really been done in film before,” says Matt Reeves

Details about Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II remain scarce, with little information available about the plot—or even whether the film will be part of James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. What is known, however, is that Reeves intends to further explore the man behind the mask, Bruce Wayne, while also expanding the focus on Batman’s iconic rogues gallery. In particular, he has teased the introduction of a villain “never really done in a film before,” hinting at a fresh direction for the franchise.

“In a lot of the other films, which I love, once you get past the origin tale, which we didn’t quite do, but we did something that referred to his origins, then you start telling the Rogues Gallery story and that character’s sort of arc,” Reeves told Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz in a red carpet interview. “But I never wanted to lose [Robert Pattinson] at the center of these stories, and so that is really what we set our aim on.”

The War for the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield director revealed that finding a fresh angle for the sequel played a major role in choosing its villain. He hinted that the antagonist in The Batman Part II will be someone “never really done in a movie before.”

In Reeves’ defense, the reason not much information has been revealed for The Batman Part II lies with the fact that he has carefully safeguarded its secrets thus far. To prevent spoilers from being leaked, the writer-director told Variety that he keeps the script safeguarded in a secret pouch.

“We put [the script] into a secret pouch that literally has a lock on it with a code,” he said. “[Pattinson] was in New York at the time, and everything is high security.”

The Batman Part II is slated to begin filming in spring 2026, with a theatrical release currently scheduled for October 2027.
