James Gunn confirms talks with Keanu Reeves about Constantine sequel, but hasn’t read a script yet

When it hit theaters in 2005, Constantine, a supernatural action-horror film starring Keanu Reeves as the sardonic, chain-smoking exorcist John Constantine, landed with only moderate box office success and a mixed reaction from fans. Loosely inspired by DC/Vertigo’s Hellblazer comics, the film took creative liberties that didn’t sit well with purists at the time. But over the years, Constantine has carved out a lasting legacy, evolving into a cult classic celebrated for its dark atmosphere, striking visuals and memorable performances not only from Keanu Reeves, but from Peter Stomare as Lucifer and Tilda Swinton as the angel Gabriel.

Thanks in large part to the success and enduring popularity of the John Wick franchise, which kicked off in 2014, Keanu Reeves has experienced a major career resurgence over the past decade. And with James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe just getting underway, there’s arguably no better time to revisit Constantine, with Reeves once more in the lead role.

Gunn revealed that he has indeed discussed a Constantine sequel with Keanu Reeves, noting that talks have been ongoing since 2022 and that a preliminary script was completed in 2024 — though he admitted he hasn’t seen the script himself yet.

“I’ve discussed it on and off. I’ve discussed it with Keanu,” Gunn said in a recent episode of BobaTalks. “But I have not read any script yet.”

Reportedly, Reeves has seen the early Constantine sequel scripts, but not one that he’s been happy with yet.

“[There’s] a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves] is not so happy with the scripts,” Peter Stomare told The Direct earlier this year.

Stomare added, “It took a long time for [the original] to become a cult movie. It really worked, and it will work on the audience again,” he continued. “You don’t have to add a lot of action and shootouts. You have other movies. Don’t turn it into big Marvel… [Don’t turn it] into us flying around in harnesses all the time and shooting each other up. Don’t bring in the big guns. Let it be.”
