What’s next for James Gunn’s DC Universe: Beyond the Superman Formula

There was some hesitation about whether Superman—one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time—could achieve greater success and profitability under the unique vision of new DC Universe head James Gunn, especially following the mixed reception to the character’s recent, darker portrayals under Zack Snyder.

That hesitation has already been put to rest, however, with Superman earning over $250 million worldwide in its opening weekend—surpassing its production budget right out of the gate. Still, don’t expect future films in Gunn’s DC Universe to follow Superman’s exact formula. Gunn has made it clear that each project under his direction will have its own distinct tone and style, much like the diverse range of stories found in the comic books on which they’re based.

“‘Clayface’ is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do,” Gunn told CBS Mornings. “There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like ‘Superman.’ The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it… We don’t want people being bored.”

Clayface, written by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) and directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil, The Woman in Black), is slated to begin production later this year, with a tentative theatrical release set for September 2026. Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries will star as Matt Hagen, a washed-up B-movie actor who turns to a mysterious substance in a desperate bid to revive his career—only to transform into a monstrous, shapeshifting figure. The film, which draws inspiration from the Batman: The Animated Series episode “Feat of Clay,” has been described by Gunn as featuring “amazing body horror,” with an R-rating confirmed.

Supergirl, portrayed by Milly Alcock (known for House of the Dragon and Sirens), made a brief appearance at the end of Superman and will take center stage in her own upcoming solo film. Inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021–22), the story follows a hardened, emotionally scarred Kara Zor-El—one who survived the destruction of Krypton from a distant fragment and carries the trauma of that experience. James Gunn has described the film as a “beautiful, star-spanning tale” and a darker, more mature reimagining of the character. Krypto the Superdog, who played a key role in Superman, will also feature prominently in Supergirl, as Kara is, canonically, his original owner.
