Will Pierce Brosnan Return as Dr. Fate in the DC Universe? New comments spark speculation

Although it may not have reshaped the DC film universe quite the way Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson once promised, the underwhelming Black Adam still delivered a pleasant surprise in the casting of renowned actor Pierce Brosnan (of James Bond fame) playing an older, wizened Dr. Fate, founding member of the Justice Society of America and mystical wielder of the Helmet of Fate.

Although Dr. Fate’s fate seemed sealed in Black Adam and the broader DC cinematic landscape was thrown into turmoil after the film’s box-office stumble — leading to James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the franchise — Brosnan recently revealed that Dr. Fate will be returning in Gunn’s new DC Universe, and he’s expressed genuine interest in stepping back into the role.

“I’ve heard that Doctor Fate might get his own show or his own movie. I’ve even heard he may appear in the next Superman,” the 72-year-old Irish actor said, referring to Gunn’s upcoming film Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

When asked whether he’d be willing to return as Dr. Fate, Brosnan didn’t hesitate: “I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much and I would definitely be open to it.”

While it’s still unclear whether Brosnan himself will return as Dr. Fate in the next Superman movie, Gunn mentioned the character appearing on a mural in his Superman movie on an episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast.

“I think Doctor Fate’s in there,” Gunn said, hinting that there will be more of the character to come in future DC Universe films.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Up next in the DC Universe is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock and set for a June 2026 release, followed by the body-horror–inspired Batman villain film Clayface, arriving in September 2026.

Would you like to see Pierce Brosnan return as Dr. Fate in the DC Universe? Or do you think Gunn should select a younger actor like he did with the other heroes in the rebooted universe? Let us know in the comments.
