Elizabeth Olsen on returning as Wanda in the MCU: “I’m not ‘returning’ to anything right now. I’m not doing anything for Marvel”

Is Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda in the MCU, particularly after the events her character went through (and put others through) in her character’s last appearance as the Scarlet Witch in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? The timing seems like it could be right, particularly with Disney+’s upcoming Agatha: House of Harkness series, which sees Kathryn Hahn reprising her role of Agatha Harkness, one of the most powerful witches in the Marvel Universe and an integral figure in WandaVision set for a release sometime in 2023.

The 34-year-old Olsen, who just revealed her biggest gripe with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a previous interview, isn’t so sure. In fact, she might be taking a break from Marvel.

“I think I answered a question wrong. Someone asked me if I would be ‘returning,’ and they said, for instance, ‘are we going to see you in this thing. And I said, ‘Well, I hope I’m returning,'” Olsen explained in the latest Variety Awards Circuit Podcast.

“I’m not ‘returning’ to anything right now. I’m not doing anything for Marvel. Nothing, and it’s not that I’m trying to be cheeky. They’ll let me know when they’ll let me know,” Olsen continued.

Olsen explained that the reprieve from the MCU has been “good for her,” because it has allowed her to explore new avenues with her acting career.

“And do I miss it? I don’t miss it. I just did two years straight of it. I think the break’s been good for me. I need to build other characters. It’s important for me. I’m grateful for this show [“Love & Death”] because it came at a great time — after playing Wanda for two years straight, and then I had to talk about it for another year. So it’s nice having something else to focus on and highlight.”

While Olsen doesn’t seem entranced with the thought of rushing back into the MCU at the moment, she has expressed that she’d like to see her Scarlet Witch/Wanda character “redeemed” at some point.

“We can do anything with her now!” Olsen said when asked what direction could be taken with Wanda if she does return to the role eventually. “I feel like we’ve done so much. Now, we can really have fun; I feel like there’s a lot more humor to be had with her. She’s often the emotion of a story, and I’m curious to see what we can explore. And hopefully [we can] give her some redemption.”
