The highly-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine, which director Shawn Levy says will be “even more emotional” than the first two Deadpool films, is almost upon us and with it comes both Disney and the MCU’s first foray into R-rated superhero territory and also the beginning of what Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige calls the “Mutant Age” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It’s just the beginning,” Feige said at the Deadpool & Wolverine world premiere red carpet. “I’ve said that mutants are coming, and it all starts with this movie. I can’t wait for people to see what [Deadpool & Wolverine] has in store and know that this is the beginning of mutants finally, finally arriving into the MCU.”
As for whether or not the R-rating of Deadpool & Wolverine will be something that influences future MCU films, Feige said, “Every [Marvel] film is important, and there’s nothing better than a great movie for a Cinematic Universe,” he began. “The before and after [aspect of it all]? I think a lot of people talk about the R-rating and, ‘Is every [Marvel] movie going to be R-rated after this?’ [And the answer is] of course not. But I hope every movie after this embraces its tonality the way the way ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the way this team does.”
Coincidentally, Feige served as producer on Deadpool & Wolverine alongside his former boss, Lauren Shuler Donner, the former of which has produced such films as Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan, The Wolverine, X-Men, X-2: X-Men United and the FX series Legion.
“I was there for [X-Men] a quarter century ago,” Feige said. “That’s pretty remarkable. I had thought that that part of my film career was behind me. Those first few X-Men movies are really important to me and started me on this journey. But when we started Marvel Studios, we didn’t have the rights. I thought I would just be a fan watching them. And now here, at the premiere with Hugh [Jackman, who plays Wolverine], it’s remarkable.”
