A year ago, Ryan Reynolds made it sound as though a fourth standalone Deadpool movie probably would not be the next time audiences saw the Merc with a Mouth on the big screen in the MCU. However, a recent interview at Fanatics Fest suggests Reynolds may have changed his mind, perhaps thanks in part to renewed inspiration from some of Deadpool’s most notable comic book storylines.
“There’s a few really deep cuts that are missing from the movies, I think,” Reynolds said. “There’s certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan is a friend and an incredible comic book writer. There’s stuff coming, there eventually will be another Deadpool film.”
Nicieza is credited as Deadpool’s co-creator alongside artist Rob Liefeld and wrote the character’s first appearance in New Mutants #98. He also helped shape Wade Wilson’s early years through several appearances, the character’s first miniseries, Deadpool: The Circle Chase, and one of his most popular comic book runs, Cable & Deadpool, which lasted 50 issues from 2004 to 2008.
Duggan’s signature work with the character began with the 2012 Deadpool ongoing series, which included acclaimed arcs such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” That storyline teamed Deadpool with Captain America and Wolverine in a darker narrative that dug into Wade Wilson’s Weapon X past.
Duggan also helped introduce one of the biggest shifts in Deadpool’s modern mythos with Deadpool: Dracula’s Gauntlet, which brought the supernatural succubus Shiklah into Wade’s life. The storyline eventually led to one of the strangest and most memorable moments in Deadpool history: his marriage to Shiklah.
If Reynolds is looking to Nicieza and Duggan’s work for inspiration, Deadpool 4 could have no shortage of unusual, violent and surprisingly emotional comic book material to pull from.
