Release date for Moon Knight on Disney Plus revealed

Moon Knight on Disney Plus, which lead actor (and Golden Globe award winner) Oscar Isaac recently called “the best risk he’s ever taken” may be hitting Disney’s streaming service even earlier than anticipated: March 30th, 2022 — according to sources close to That Hashtag Show and OneTakeNews. Brandon Matthews of The Illuminerdi (via his Twitter) also backed up the March 30th release date for Moon Knight on Disney Plus, divulging that the series’ first trailer was likely to be revealed during this year’s Super Bowl.

Although Marvel has yet to affirm the rumor in an official capacity, the March 30th release date for Moon Knight on Disney Plus would see the series airing before the May 6th release of Dr. Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multverse of Madness in theaters as well as before the as-of-yet-unrevealed dates for upcoming MCU Disney Plus series She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel.

Moon Knight on Disney Plus, which stars Isaac in the role of Marc Spector/Moon Knight, May Calamawy in a leading female role and Ethan Hawke as a still unnamed Marvel villain, is being written and developed by head writer Jeremy Slater of The Umbrella Academy fame.

The series should easily be the grittiest, violent, street-level (with some fantastical and psychological elements thrown in) series since Netflix’s Daredevil and Punisher, although probably not on the level as the aforementioned, considering Disney Plus hasn’t ever nor isn’t likely to be keen on airing something as brutal and graphic. That being said, Moon Knight is likely to be an interesting from MCU overseer Kevin Feige gauging just how far he can push the bar in terms of depicting a character as ruthless, and at times unhinged, as the titular vigilante.

Moon Knight was created in 1975 and first appeared in an issue of Marvel’s Werewolf by Night. The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin. Moon Knight is a Marine and CIA operative turned vigilante after being left for dead on a mission and making a pact with the Egyptian moon good Khonshu. It is unclear whether or not Spector is actually granted supernatural abilities by Khonshu or if his affiliation with the deity is a result of his dissociative identity disorder, the latter of which sees Spector taking on the guise of different personalities such as taxi driver Jacob Lockley or the white-suited Mr. Knight.
