Aubrey Plaza laments not getting a role in Deadpool 2: “That one hurt. Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could’ve gone wrong?”

Aubrey Plaza isn’t exactly a stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with key roles in 2017’s Legion series on FX and the upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, but there’s still one Marvel role she wishes she could have had in retrospect: the probability-altering, luck-based assassin, Domino in Deadpool 2.

“There are a lot of roles that I really wanted that I didn’t get, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know, the one that sticks out to me for some reason, I think it was Deadpool 2,” the 39-year-old actress explained in a video interview with Cosmopolitan.

“I had just come off a plane and I think I was shooting Legion at the time,” Plaza continued, “and I really wasn’t in a good zone because you have to be in an auditioning zone and I was in a ‘work zone.’ That one hurt. Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could go wrong? We would be great together.”

While it’s difficult to say we would’ve liked Audrey Plaza to have gotten the role as Domino in Deadpool 2, especially considering how well actress Zazie Beetz embodied the character, it’s interesting to think of how Plaza might have approached the character differently or how she would’ve contrasted with Beetz’ version in retrospect.

Plaza, who will appear in the aforementioned Agatha: Darkhold Diaries sometime in late 2024 on Disney+, has also been (jokingly or not) attached to the name of another iconic character in geek culture: Lara Croft. Plaza’s filmmaker friend Edgar Wright (Last Night in Soho, Shaun of the Dead) mistook a publicity photo of Plaza from the movie Emily as Tomb Raider‘s Lara Croft.

“It was so funny when [Edgar] texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are,” Plaza told Newsweek.

“Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different,” Plaza continued. “But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it. I love action movies, and I don’t discriminate against big movies or small movies. I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That’s an iconic character. She’s the original badass.”

What do you think of the fact that Aubrey Plaza laments not getting a role in Deadpool 2? Do you think she could have played a good Domino after seeing Zazie Beetz in the role? Would you like to see Audrey as Lara Croft? Let us know in the comments.
