Margot Robbie doesn’t mind passing the role of Harley Quinn to other actresses: “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions”

Will Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe, a role she’s become nearly synonymous with after starring as the popular femme fatale in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey and 2021’s The Suicide Squad?

While new DC Extended Universe head James Gunn, who also directed 2021’s The Suicide Squad has gone on record to say that Robbie “embodies the role” of Harley Quinn, and describes the character’s action sequence in the film as “probably the coolest action sequence [he’s] ever shot,” it’s still unclear whether Robbie will be reprising her role in future DCEU films. And she doesn’t seem too keen on conserving the role all to herself at the expense of other actresses.

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters,” Robbie told Variety.

Robbie added, “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

Robbie will soon see her wish come to fruition as Lady Gaga will be portraying Harley Quinn in Joker 2, a sequel to the 2019 film starring Joaquin Phoenix (who won a Best Actor Oscar for the role) which grossed $1 billion at the box office. Filmmaker Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs) will once again direct. Filming for The Joker 2 is currently underway, with the sequel slated for an October 2024 release date.

What do you think of the fact that Margot Robbie doesn’t mind passing the role of Harley Quinn to other actresses? Do you think Lady Gaga will represent the role in a way that’s comparable to Margot Robbie or in a totally different way? Let us know in the comments.
