Last time the topic was brought up regarding Elizabeth Olsen on returning as the Scarlet Witch/Wanda in the MCU, Olsen said she’d likely be taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The decision made sense, particularly considering the shocking turn of events surrounding the Scarlet Witch both in the WandaVision series on Disney+ and 2022’s Doctor Strange the Multiverse of Madness film.
Now that a few years have passed, what is the current stance of Elizabeth Olsen on returning as the Scarlet Witch/Wanda in the MCU?
“It’s a character that I love going back to when there’s a way to use her well, and I think I have been lucky that when I started I was used well,” Olsen said in a recent interview with FM104. “I think people didn’t know what to do with me for a second there… if there’s a good way to use her I’m always happy to come back.”
What’s most likely is that if Elizabeth Olsen returns as the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’ll be either a variant from another reality or will see her powers from Multiverse of Madness, which were crazy overpowered, significantly nerfed. In that movie, Scarlet Witch was able to strip others of their powers, as we saw when she did just that to Captain Marvel, remove Black Bolt’s mouth with a thought, and even both escape from and subsequently defeat Professor X after the latter took over her mind, among many other nigh-omnipotent feats.
Another route that writers can take to bring Wanda/Scarlet Witch back in the MCU would be to make her a mutant like she is in the comic books. In the movies, Scarlet Witch is the result of experimentation with one of the Infinity Stones, the Mind Stone in particular. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has noted in the recent past that Deadpool & Wolverine will be “just the beginning of mutants” in the MCU, so introducing a mutant version of Wanda/Scarlet Witch more in line with her origin from the comic books is a logical choice.
